Rita in Poreč :-)

Apologies for cross-posting, but I simply need to share my news with you!

Yesterday was a very special day. Miha (my husband, you saw him briefly during our Skype interview) and I drove to Poreč, Croatia, and met up with Rita and Hector - Rita, my dear online friend and partner, Rita your wonderful English teacher. Incredible as an afternoon like this would have seemed to me less than 3 months ago, it really happened yesterday.

It was a beautiful waning summer day. And the world got… Continue

Hobson's choice

Remember that a few classes ago, Hobson's choice came up but we didn't know what it meant? Well, I came across the meaning while I was searching another word in the dictionary, and there it was! According to the dictionary, this idiom comes from Tobias Hobson, a man who hired out horses in the 17th century. He gave his customers the choice of the horse nearest the stable door or none at all.

Hope you haven't found that out while I was away. However, it good to have it in another place in… Continue

TASKS FOR PRACTICE for the last week in July

Hi, all dear students,

As we've been missing too many classes, and since you now have enough time to devote to your English, you are ALL expected to finish unit 4 and 5 from your Exam Maximiser book (and unit 3 those who have not done it). This means that you'll be revising Modals, Conditionals, Intensifiers and Modifiers, and Comparatives, among other activities.

Please, also revise the use of "wish" (Unit 6). We are quite behind and need to be responsible,… Continue

I hate the flu

In my hiper personal opinion, yes, we are being paranoic and too much fearfull to that new desease: the h1n1 flu, if you take a good look to the numbers, the regular every-day flu kills around 2000 people here in argentina only, meanwhile this flu only have killed 53 so far, and all those who died, where inmunodepressed ( I think thats the word), meaning that us, the young and healty cae students, must not worry about it, as simply as that.

Joke :O

I'll try to translate the joke.. here it goes! :)

A man is trying to get a job at a tailors shop. The shop's owner is not completely shure about this man.. So he ofeers him a deal: "I will give you a day to sell as much as you can. I will come back tomorrow and see how well you can sell. But this is your only chance, so work as hard as you can!"

He comes back the next day, and finds out that every single suit has been sold. The man is an exellent seller! But the owner… Continue

I know you were drunk yesterday

A fellow decides to take off early from work and go drinking. He stays until the bar closes at three in the morning, at which time he is extremely drunk. After leaving the bar, he returns home on foot.

When he enters his house, he doesn't want to wake anyone, so he takes off his shoes and starts tip-toeing up the stairs. Half-way up the stairs though, he falls over backwards and lands flat on his back. That wouldn't have been so bad, except that he had couple of empty pint bottles in… Continue

Are we being paranoic with these measures taken...?

All dear students,

As we won't see each other for a while, it would be great to keep connected with the language and among ourselves!

So I am bringing forward a comment Diegui posted, which I would like you to post your opinion on: by closing schools and institutions at the moment owing to the spread of the "swine flu" we are being paranoic...

Do you agree?

Duck joke

Three women die together in an accident and go to heaven.

When they get there, St. Peter says, “We only have one rule here in

heaven: don’t step on the ducks!”

So they enter heaven, and sure enough, there are ducks all over the

place. It is almost impossible not to step on a duck, and although

they try their best to avoid them, the first woman accidentally

steps on one.

Along comes St. Peter with the ugliest man she ever saw.

St. Peter chains them… Continue

Teacher: "Nick, what is the past participle of the verb to ring?"
Nick: "What do you think it is, Sir?"
Teacher: "I don't think, I KNOW!"
Nick: "I don't think I know either, Sir!"

Second Opinion

The doctor to the patient: 'You are very sick'
The patient to the doctor: 'Can I get a second opinion?'
The doctor again: 'Yes, you are very ugly too...'

Remember I had to translate the joke... I did my best! :) Well, here it goes...

Queen Elizabeth II invites the president of Argentina, Nestor Kirchner, to have a cup of tea with her at Buckingham Palace, in London.

During the meeting, Nestor asks the Queen:

- Which is your lidership philosophy?

She answers:

- Is to be surrounded by intelligent people.

- And how do you know if they are intelligent?

- I ask the right question. Let me show you.

The… Continue
